How to Season Your Traeger Grill: A Complete Guide

Seasoning and burning in your grill is a crucial first step to ensure optimal performance and longevity. This process helps burn off any residual oils from manufacturing and creates a non-stick surface. Whether you have a WiFIRE grill or a non-connected grill, follow these detailed steps to properly season your Traeger grill.

Steps for Seasoning Your WiFIRE Grill

  1. Prime the Auger Tube:

    • Add fresh hardwood pellets to the hopper.
    • Plug in the grill and turn it on using the power switch.
    • Use the controller to navigate to “Select Auger > Prime Auger” and select “Done” once pellets start falling into the firepot.
  2. Set Initial Temperature:

    • Set the temperature to 350°F and press Ignite. Close the lid.
    • Once the temperature reaches 350°F, let it run for 20 minutes.
  3. Increase Temperature:
    • Adjust the temperature to 450-500°F and confirm.
    • Let it run for an additional 30 minutes at this higher temperature.
  4. Shut Down the Grill:
    • For Pro Series: Press the knob for 3 seconds.
    • For Ironwood, Timberline, or Silverton models: Press the controller’s power button for 3 seconds.

These steps can also be managed via the app for WiFIRE-enabled grills.

Steps for Seasoning Your Non-Connected Grill

  1. Prepare the Grill:

    • Plug in and turn on the grill.
    • Add hardwood pellets to the hopper and prime the auger.
    • Open the lid and remove the grill grate, drip tray, and heat baffle.
  2. Initial Firing:

    • Set the grill to High for 2-5 minutes until pellets fall into the firepot.
    • Set the grill to Shutdown Cycle and turn off using the power switch.
  3. Reassemble Components:

    • Return the grill grate, drip tray, and heat baffle to their positions.
    • Turn the grill back on, close the lid, and set to Smoke for about 15 minutes.
  4. High-Temperature Burn:

    • Once the fire is established, set to High for 30 minutes.
    • After this, the grill is ready for cooking or can be shut down.
  5. Shutdown Cycle:

    • Set the grill to Shutdown Cycle, which runs for about 25 minutes.
    • Turn off the grill using the power switch after the cycle completes.

By following these steps, your Traeger grill will be seasoned and ready to deliver mouthwatering meals like brisket, ribs, and pulled pork.
