How to Clean a Flat Top Grill: A Simple Guide

Keeping your Traeger Flat Top Grill clean and well-maintained is essential for optimal performance and longevity. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you with the process.

When Should You Clean Your Flat Top Grill?

You should clean your Flat Top Grill after or before each cook, preferably after when the griddle is still hot as it makes the cleaning process easier.

Necessary Tools

  • Traeger® Flatrock Flat Top Grill Scraper or another scraping tool
  • Clean cloth or paper towels
  • Tongs
  • Traeger® Flat Top Grill Seasoning & Cast Iron Conditioner or canola oil

Cleaning the Cooktop

  1. Heat the cooking surface on medium heat for 10 minutes if it's not already hot.
  2. Use a scraper to clean the entire surface, directing bits of food and grease into the grease chute. For stubborn bits, let them char, then scrape again. Adding a little water can help dislodge them.
  3. Apply a thin layer of high-smoke-point oil (like canola, grapeseed, or flax oil) or Traeger® Flat Top Grill Seasoning. Spread it using paper towels and tongs to cover the cooktop and sidewalls. Heat until the smoking ends (about 10 minutes) to help protect the cooktop from rusting.
  4. Turn all knobs to the OFF position and close the propane tank valve. Let the grill cool completely before closing the lid and covering it with a grill cover.

Cleaning the Body

  1. Turn off the grill and let it cool completely.
  2. Use a cloth or paper towel with Traeger® All Natural Cleaner to wipe any messy areas on the grill body. Do not use any cleaner on the cooking surface.
  3. Empty the EZ-Clean Grease Keg and install a new liner if needed.
  4. Once the grill is completely cool, cover it with a Traeger® Flat Top Grill Cover.

Cleaning Rust

  1. Use a green scouring pad and water to remove rust. If rust persists, use 220-grit sandpaper.
  2. Wipe off all rust residue with water and a cloth. Ensure the surface is dry before proceeding.
  3. Re-season your cooktop to restore its protective layer.

Cleaning Grill Burners

  1. Remove the burners by unscrewing the fasteners on the burner brackets. Use a pen or pencil to clear out any debris in the burner inlet hole.
  2. Wrap the burners in aluminum foil if storing the grill for an extended period to prevent insect infestation. Remove the foil before reattaching the burners for use.

Storing Your Flat Top Grill

  • Use the Traeger® Flatrock Flat Top Grill Cover for protection.
  • In regions with temperatures below -20°F (-29°C), store the grill in a warmer area, like a garage, during cold months.

Effective Techniques for Maintaining Your Flat Top Grill

A flat top grill is a versatile and essential tool for any outdoor cooking enthusiast. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your grill but also ensures optimal performance. Here are some effective techniques to keep your flat top grill in top shape.

Routine Cleaning for Consistent Performance

Consistency is key when it comes to cleaning your flat top grill. Make it a habit to clean the grill after each use. This practice prevents the buildup of food particles and grease, which can affect the flavor of your food and the grill's performance. While the grill is still hot, use a scraper to remove any food debris. This simple step can save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

Preventing Rust: A Crucial Step

Rust is the enemy of any grill. To prevent it, always apply a thin layer of oil or a specialized grill seasoning after cleaning. This not only protects the metal but also enhances the non-stick properties of the cooktop. If rust does appear, a green scouring pad or fine sandpaper can help remove it. Re-season the cooktop immediately to restore its protective layer.

Deep Cleaning for Long-Term Care

Periodically, your flat top grill will require a deep clean. This includes cleaning the burners and the grill body. Remove the burners and clear out any debris that may have accumulated. This step is crucial, especially after long periods of non-use, to ensure the grill operates efficiently. For the grill body, use a natural cleaner and avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the surface.

Seasonal Storage Tips

Proper storage is vital, especially in extreme weather conditions. Use a grill cover to protect your grill from the elements. If you live in a region with severe cold, consider storing the grill in a warmer area during winter months. This prevents damage caused by freezing temperatures and ensures your grill is ready for use when the weather improves.

By following these maintenance tips, you can keep your flat top grill in excellent condition, ensuring it remains a reliable tool for your culinary adventures. Regular care and attention not only enhance the longevity of your grill but also ensure that every meal you prepare is cooked to perfection.
