How to Cook Fish on the Grill

Do You Want Your Fish Without the Skin or with the Skin?

Depending on how you want it, you can grill your fish with the skin on or off. It’s something you decide while purchasing.

Start by finding nice and fresh fish steaks for grilling. You can as well opt for a whole fish. What is important is getting a good one that doesn’t fall apart easily when cooked. Some of the best fish to grill include Halibut, Tuna, Swordfish, and Salmon.

Regardless of how you want it, the grilling process and time don’t change. However, a fish with the skin is likely to stick on the grill ridges if not well prepared.

- Prepare your ingredients

If you’re grilling steaks and not the whole fish, ensure it’s at least 1 inch thick.

For you to attain a better flavor, marinate your fish. Use your favorite recipe.

If your fish was stored in the fridge, leave it to attain room temperature for about 5 to 10 minutes before you start marinating it.

- Marinate your fish/steak

Start by brushing your fish with oil. It prevents your fish from sticking on the grilling surface. Also, add some salt, pepper, and lemon to the fish.

Pour your marinade on the fish /steaks and rub it with your fingers on both sides of the fish. Leave it aside for about 20-30 minutes.

- Preheat the grill

Regardless of the grill, you’re using; you should preheat it some minutes before you start cooking. Usually, an electric grill should be preheated for about 10-15 minutes before grilling.

However, before you start heating, ensure the cooking surface is clean.

- Grill your fish

Brush your cooking surface with some oils to prevent fish from sticking.

Then place your fish on the grill to cook. A fish of one-inch thick should cook for about 8-10 minutes, while a thicker one will take more time. Each side of the fish should cook for about 3-5 minutes before turning it.

You can grill your fish on medium heat.

- Leave it to rest

Once your fish is ready, remove it from the grill and let it cool down for about 3-5 minutes before you serve. It also allows the marinating juices to run back into the fish’s flesh.

Common Challenges while Grilling Fish and How to Overcome

- Fish sticking on the grill

There are several reasons why your fish might stick on the grill. Among them include:

  • The grill is not hot enough to cook- as stated above, allow your grill to heat for about 10 minutes before cooking
  • The cooking surface is not clean- always rub the grate with a cloth or a brush to eliminate any dirt on it before cooking
  • Your fish is not done cooking- allow your fish to cook for about 4-5 minutes before turning it. However, thicker steaks and fillets should cook longer.

- Fish falling apart

Fish falling apart is a result of selecting the wrong species of fish for grilling. Also, you might not have cooked it well enough on each side.

- Overcooked fish

Undercooked and overcooked fish does not taste any good. Overcooking is a result of cooking on a scorching grill or cooking it for extended periods.

Cook on low to medium heat. Also, brush your fish with oil to seal the moisture for enhanced cooking.

Final Thought

As you can see from the above guide, grilling fish on any type of grill is easy. However, some aspects such as heat control, how long you cook the fish, and the condition of your cooking surface is critical.

Grilled fish is one of the healthiest foods as it contains high proteins, low fats, and Omega-3 fatty acids.
