English muffins are one of the favorite breakfast foods or part of a brunch, and they are often an alternative to toast. Many people tend to confuse them with crumpets because they share similar ingredients. However, they have a significant difference, i.e., English muffins are made from firm dough while crumpet is made from loose batter.

Can I make English muffins on an electric griddle? Yes, you can cook English muffins on an electric griddle and it’s easier than you think. Unlike frying pans, electric griddles have a large non-stick cooking surface that allows easy food flipping. Additionally, the increased space can accommodate many English muffins at once. Below is a simple guide on making English muffins on an electric griddle.

Make English Muffins on an Indoor Electric Griddle

Making English muffins on an electric griddle is similar to cooking pancakes on a griddle, and it’s a simple process as outlined below. Additionally, you can easily control the temperature on the electric griddle.

A. Ingredients needed

First, you need to have all the necessary ingredients to make nice English muffins. As highlighted above, often, people confuse crumpets with English muffins. Their ingredients are different, and it’s what distinguishes them. Below is a list of necessary ingredients you need:

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Instant dry yeast
  • All-purpose flour
  • Water
  • Butter
  • Whole milk
  • Vegetable oil

Once you have all of the above ingredients, follow the below process.

B. Directions/ Instructions to make a batter

  1. Start by mixing your all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, instant dry yeast in a big bowl (your bowl should be enough to accommodate your desired amount of dough). Basically, you’re mixing dry ingredients separately.
  2. You may slightly warm your milk in a microwave.
  3. Now, mix other ingredients in a different bowl. Start by adding some milk, water, and a little bit of butter. It’s basically your wet mixture.
  4. Then add your liquid mixture to the dry mixture as you stir all together. You want to attain a sticky-like dough and a wet one. Generally, it should be stretchy.
  5. Cover your dough in a cling wrap and a clean fabric cloth/towel over it.
  6. Then store your dough for about 12 to 24 hours before cooking. The fermentation process will significantly enhance the flavor and texture of your English muffins.

C. Cut your dough into small pieces

Prepare a clean, flat, and floured surface. Then remove your dough from the stored bowl/ container and put it on the above surface. You should also flatten it.

Allow it to rest for a few minutes before you start cutting small circular balls that look like dinner rolls. You can as well use muffin rings to make equal and evenly shaped English muffins, and other people use scone cutters.

The next step is to lay your English muffins on a baking tray. Then cover them again with a cling wrap and leave them for about 30-40 minutes. It allows them to rise.

D. Cook on the electric griddle

Before placing your English muffins on an indoor electric griddle for cooking, you should first preheat it to about 350 degrees F.

If you find it necessary, spray your electric griddle’s cooking surface with some cooking oil. However, you might not need the cooking because the griddle has a non-stick cooking surface or coat.

Then carefully lift your English muffins from the baking tray using a spatula/ flipper and place them on the preheated electric griddle for cooking. However, don’t overcrowd your griddle with excess muffins. If you want many English muffins, you cook in batches.

You’ll notice the muffins will spread out a little bit and puff up. Let them cook for about 7 minutes on that side till they form a nice golden brown color.

Then use your spatula to flip the muffins to cook on the top side. It should take about 4-5 minutes to cook on the second side. Additionally, the cooking side should turn golden brown.

Lastly, remove them from the electric griddle to a plate. Also, turn off your indoor electric griddle.

Note: English muffins are best and delicious when off the griddle and slightly warm. You may top it with your favorite jam or topping.
