What Ingredient Do You Need?

First, you need to have all your ingredients in place before cooking. The below list shows all the necessary ingredients needed:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Grounded pepper
  • Sea salt
  • Chili powder (optional)

Note: you can adjust the quantity of the above ingredients depending on the number of people you’ll serve.

Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

1. Parboil the sweet potatoes

You need to boil your sweet potatoes in hot water before placing them on the grill. You’ll partially cook them. When to grill raw sweet potatoes, they might take a prolonged period to cook or even not cook evenly.

Wash your sweet potatoes and cook them in hot water for about 12-15 minutes.

Parboiling leaves your sweet potatoes well-cooked and tender.

2. Cut the sweet potatoes into thin slices.

After 15 minutes, drain the water and slice your sweet potatoes into slices. Your slices should be approximately ½ inch.

Then arrange them as a single layer on a tray. It allows easy and even seasoning.

3. Season your sweet potatoes

Use a basting brush to spread your olive oil on the upper side of the sweet potato slices.

Olive oil is an essential ingredient since it helps the seasoning to stick to the sweet potatoes. It also prevents them from sticking to the grill’s cooking surface.

Then season your sweet potatoes with a grounded pepper, chili powder, and salt.

Note: you should repeat this process on both sides of sweet potato slices.

Preheat your Electric Grill

Preheat your electric grill for about 10 minutes until you attain medium-high heat. Attain a heat of about 350-400 degrees F on your grill’s cooking surface.

Preheating the grill helps in forming nice and clean char marks.

Grill your Sweet Potato Slices

Place the sweet potato slices on your preheated grill for cooking using a tong. Ensure your sweet potato slices aren’t overcrowded and are on a single layer on the cooking surface.

Let your sweet potato slices cook for about 4-6 minutes on the first side before flipping them to cook the other side. Then, the other side should cook for a similar period.

Ensure they’re well caramelized and you have nice dark grill marks before removing them from the grill. Also, the outer side should be crispy but somewhat fluffy on the inside.

Remove and serve

Once your sweet potatoes are ready, remove them from the grill to serve. You might opt to add your favorite dipping sauce or a chipotle lime sauce.

Grilling sweet potatoes is as simple as outlined above.
